of paper presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings, Dallas, August 9-13,1998. Naomi S. Altman, Chair, Dept. of Biometrics, 434 Warren Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 4853-7801 ([email protected]); C. Clark, Director, ([email protected]); K. Fristrup, Asst. Director ([email protected]), and K. Dunsmore, Research Asst. Bioacoustics Research Program, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY Hydroacoustics have become increasingly important to supplement or replace visual observation of whales and other marine mammals. In this poster session I summarize approaches to a number of studies including: use of dual mode (acoustic and visual) surveys of whales to determine population size, tracking individual animals from acoustic detections, and determining the response of marine mammals to noisy human activities. Statistical methods employed include distance sampling, penalized nonlinear models and graphical methods based on nonparametric smoothing.

The dependence for leukocyte function-associated antigen-1/ICAM-1 interactions in T cell activation cannot be overcome by expression of high density TCR ligand.
The leukocyte-specific integrin, LFA-1, can enhance T cell activation. However, it is unclear whether the binding of LFA-1 to its ligand, ICAM-1, functions through intercellular adhesion alone, resulting in an augmentation of the TCR signal, or involves an additional LFA-1-mediated cellular signal transduction pathway. We have previously shown that naive CD4+ lymph node T cells, isolated from D...
متن کاملStudies on Antigens Associated with the Activation of Murine Mononuclear Phagocytes: Kinetics of and Requirements for Vitro' Induction of Lymphocyte Function-associated (lfa)-1 Antigen In
Macrophages activated and primed in vivo, although not resident or responsive macrophages, express the lymphocyte function associated (LFA)-1 antigen. By contrast, the biochemically related Mac1 antigen is expressed on all populations of macrophages. In the present paper, we studied regulation of the LFA-1 antigen in vitro. LFA-1 could be induced in vitro n thioglycollate (TG)-elicited but not ...
متن کاملLFA-1-mediated T cell costimulation through increased localization of TCR/class II complexes to the central supramolecular activation cluster and exclusion of CD45 from the immunological synapse.
T cell activation is associated with a dramatic reorganization of cell surface proteins and associated signaling components into discrete subdomains within the immunological synapse in T cell:APC conjugates. However, the signals that direct the localization of these proteins and the functional significance of this organization have not been established. In this study, we have used wild-type and...
متن کاملMolecular mimicry in Lyme arthritis demonstrated at the single cell level: LFA-1 alpha L is a partial agonist for outer surface protein A-reactive T cells.
Antibiotic treatment-resistant Lyme arthritis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease that follows infection with Borrelia burgdorferi (BB:). A marked Ab and T cell response to BB: outer surface protein A (OspA) often develops during prolonged episodes of arthritis. Furthermore, cross-reaction between the bacterial OspA and human LFA-1alpha(L) at the T cell level and the inability to detect BB:...
متن کاملDownregulation of cell adhesion molecules LFA-3 and ICAM-1 in Epstein- Barr virus-positive Burkitt's lymphoma underlies tumor cell escape from virus-specific T cell surveillance
Some EBV+ BL cell lines continue to grow as single cells on in vitro passage, show an unusually restricted expression of EBV-latent genes and retain a BL biopsy-like cell surface phenotype (group I/II lines); others change to growth in aggregates, show a broader pattern of virus latent gene expression, and develop a cell surface phenotype more characteristic of EBV-transformed LCL (group III li...
